Silent Hill fans worldwide are fascinated by Kanayama Town in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture — the real-life setting that inspired Silent Hill f. With streets and alleyways so strikingly similar to the game, many visitors feel as though they are stepping directly into Silent Hill itself.
Kokkun Ch. Brings Kanayama to Life
YouTuber Kokkun / Kokkun Ch. visited Kanayama and captured the town in stunning detail. Remarkably, even real-life footage appears as if it belongs in the game world. English subtitles are available, making the content accessible to international fans.
On his first day, Kokkun was guided by a local antique dealer who also works as a tour guide. To preserve the town’s authentic atmosphere, narration was avoided, letting the streets and alleys speak for themselves. Kokkun, a dedicated gaming YouTuber, has long wanted to experience Kanayama in person, and his footage captures the haunting yet beautiful charm of the town.
A Town Steeped in History
Kanayama Town has a rich history. During the Edo period, it thrived as a post town, bustling with travelers and horse-drawn transport. Later, theaters, billiard halls, and cabarets emerged. In 1966, the construction of Iwaya Dam brought an influx of factory workers, transforming Kanayama into a lively entertainment district.
However, Kanayama has faced challenges. During the Heisei 30 heavy rains in 2018 — one of the worst floods in modern Japanese history — local shops, including the guide’s antique store, were severely affected.
The Maze of “Kinkotsu” Alleyways
One of Kanayama’s most unique features is its maze-like “Kinkotsu” (筋骨) alleys. These narrow paths were originally built as safe passages away from busy main roads. The term “Kinkotsu” symbolizes intertwined veins and bones, perfectly describing the labyrinthine streets.
Even today, local schoolchildren use these alleys for their commute. Many quirky buildings along the paths are technically illegal constructions, adding an unusual but charming character to the town. Because Kinkotsu alleys often cross both public and private property, exploring with a knowledgeable local guide is highly recommended.
Guided Tours in Kanayama
For a deeper experience, taking a guided tour is the best way to explore Kanayama and its Kinkotsu alleys. Guides share stories about the town’s history, streets, architecture, and culture, making the visit much richer than self-exploration.
